the box starring cameron diaz and james marsden
written by richard matheson (short story "button, button") and richard kelly (screenplay)
directed by richard kelly
the pace of the movie matched the slow southern virginia drawl of the lead characters—slow and heavy. the movie weighed on me and on three occasions made me jump. it's a quiet movie and takes place in the wintertime of 1976. those two aspects add to the suspense. why does everything seem scarier in the wintertime?
do i recommend it? if you're looking for a quick, cheap movie thrill, no. the story unfolds slowly and even at the end you're left wanting more—wishing you could choose your own adventure. i'd put it in the thrill category under what lies beneath. if you liked that movie, you'd probably like the box.
