grace kelly--beauty runner up to audrey hepburn.

grace kelly: a simply gorgeous, natural beauty. in my book, she's a close second only to audrey hepburn. audrey will always be my top beauty and favourite fashion icon.

the greatest photo of audrey hepburn ever.

as photographed by irving penn. an american photographer that emphasized beauty rather than fashion. and she had all the beauty any woman could ever want and couldn't buy. mr. penn was even able to capture the beauty of her soul in this stunning photo. you can just see it--her charm, her inner beauty, her kindness, how she found fun in everyday life. truly spectacular. well done.

a good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart, and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it; it is in one word, effective. irving penn

other intensely beautiful and fashionable irving penn photos. intense in their simplicity and lack of colour. how is it that grayscale photos are so remarkable? i mean, that netted face photo blows my mind.

i love the fashion art of that era. over-dramatized waistlines, accessories, necklines, makeup, and everything else. i want a giant print of each photograph and hang them in my [someday] farmhouse.

the sweetest animal photos you've ever seen--

last night, with my hubs chuckling at me, sharing the sofa, legs outstretched before us on our coffee bench and the bcs championship game on, i clicked through the sweetest, most incredible animal photos by sharon montrose, animal photographer extraordinaire, oooo-ing and awww-ing over every single shot because they're just precious. i nudged him to look at them between plays and he did, like a good husband. and, like a good wife, i responded to his exclamations during the game. gosh, what a great monday night, even though florida state won.

i dare you to resist scrolling down and releasing those gasps of adoration. if you wanna ease into it, read this excellent q&a in a cup of jo (a daily blog read of mine). but seriously, prepare to fall head-over-heels with her and her work. i did again.

that bunny bum, the alpaca, and the baby bobcat melt my heart. the way the bobcat's head is tilted in curiousity is so similar to suzy when she's playing. i want prints of every single one.

i think i'm going to email sharon requesting she photograph a white rhino. she needs to.

lots of instagram pretty.

it's remarkable to me how sensitive memories are. i have no personal connection to any of the instagram photos or photographers below and yet a collection of pixels is taking me for a nice wander down memory lane.
the first photo makes me think of our family cottage in michigan. i loved spending my summers there jumping off the dock into the lake water, climbing the sand dunes, canoeing through the swamp, chomping down on huge ice cream cones from the house of flavors, playing cards and board games, and just enjoying time with my family. those were the best summer days.
the cow in the second photo triggered a comparison to a similar photo i took of grazing cattle on the hillsides of my parents' farm in ohio. i miss it. i miss the rolling hills. i miss the chickens and goats--such funny creatures. i miss the sunrises and glistening dew on the tall field grass. i miss the thunder- and snowstorms. i miss the smells from mom's kitchen.
photos have a way of capturing memories, even if yours isn't the memory being captured. i guess maybe that's why they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

chicago in black and white instagram.

rad instagram photographs of chicago by jason peterson. are you surprised they're instagrams? i was. the quality is perfect for a black and white photograph--mostly clear and just a little grit.

the man's stride in the bridge photo takes me to the famous beatles photograph of them crossing abbey road. the simplicity of the centered tree and tiny bicycle have my attention. i would totally frame that huge and set it on a wall. love it.

what is it about lighthouses?

what is it about lighthouses?

they can be very majestic and yet still impose a true sense of serenity and calm. each in their own way. not to mention their importance for those at sea. when you stop and think of what lighthouses encompass and their purposes, their magnificence shines through.

unnerved by birds on a wire.

is it just me or is the sight of birds congregating on a wire a little unnerving? maybe i've watched alfred hitchcock's "the birds" too many times...

about a week ago, instagram's weekend hashtag project was birds on a wire. these are my favourite shots of the submitted instagram photos.

photos for national geographic.

AMAZING photographs from the 2010 national geographic photography contest. (the link came from etymologie, anthropologie's blog. so i'm really not that behind as it may appear.) the photos are incredible--as one would expect if they were going to be entered in a national geographic contest.

the eagle close-up and child on the bridge are my favourites. the child epitomizes summer vacation--net for catching things, the glowing sun, shorts and breezy hair.

photographs of trees.

how amazing are these tree photographs? the artist, myoung ho lee, photographs the solitary trees in their natural environment with a giant white canvas behind them. all of the canvas installation components--poles, rope--are later removed from the photograph through minimal digital retouching with the intent to illustrate the canvas is floating behind the tree. so cool, right?!

looking at washington, d.c.

spectacular views of familiar points of interest in our nation's capitol. the play on light and its effect on the sites is remarkable. creates quite a reverence.

it's difficult to ignore the grandeur of these sacred national treasures. not only are they robust in stature but the reverence of the immediate surrounding atmosphere is still and halting--nearly tangible, even.

sometimes i really miss living there and walking among those giants.
